Hand Sewing: Baste stitch

This simple stitch (also known as a running stitch in embroidery) is super useful and can be decorative too!

Step 1
Place the two pieces of fabric to be sewn together on top of each other.

Step 2
Knot on end of your thread. Place your needle in between the two pieces of fabric. Pull your needle through one piece of fabric which will hide your knotted end inside.
Step 3
Put your needle back through both pieces of fabric (front to back) pulling the thread through. Do the same again from back to front. This will look like a spaced series of dashes!

You are now doing the basting stitch!  To end a line of basting, you can knot between the two layers of fabric again or if you don't care about appearance, knot on the outside which can be easier to do. :)

Thank you so much for both this tutorial and the one previous, for the whip stitch. As a re-beginner (someone who learned the very basics as a kid, but either gave up or didn't follow through - that'd be me), this is wonderful and perfect for anyone who really does want to learn how to sew (knit, embroider, crochet, and all the other good stuff having to do with fabric), but has been either too intimidated or too shy to ask about these basic but very important stitches.

Thanks so much for sharing. It's helped my confidence enormously. More please! -)

The gingerbread girl looks shiny in the photo. Did you do anything at the end....like paint it with a clear finish?
She is charming!

Anonymous, no I didn't use any clear coat spray. The shine is from auto-fix on Photobucket. :)
